Should You Wash or Dry Clean Your Comforter?

How dirty is your comforter?

While you can’t see it, your comforter gets dirtier every night. As you sleep, your body sheds skin cells, along with sweat and other bodily fluids.

You lose a quarter to half a liter of moisture every night in your sleep. Your comforter gets wet and the material it’s made out of swells up. During the day, the moisture evaporates and the material shrinks back down. This process happens over and over and eventually the material becomes so matted down that the comforter holds less warmth.

Every night, you also shed 0,5 to 1.5 grams of skin flakes. House dust mites feed on your skin flakes. Invisible to the naked eye, house dust mites are not harmful, but can cause allergic reactions such as shortness of breath, sneezing, & red eyes. Even though you may not be allergic, the idea that half a million crawling creatures living in your comforter, is enough to make your skin crawl!

And while you may wash your sheets and pillow cases every week, how often do you wash your comforter?

At OrangeBag, we recommend having your comforter professionally cleaned at least once or twice a year.

SHOUD YOU WASH OR DRY-CLEAN YOUR COMFORTER?

Whether you should wash or dry clean your comforter depends on the material. The most common materials are: wool, down, and synthetic comforters. Each material requires its own maintenance process. Be sure to read the labels and follow the washing instructions carefully so you can ensure your comforter will remain warm and fluffy.

Wool Duvets Should Be Dry Cleaned

Wool comforters should be dry cleaned. Because wool has a soft, protective, and water resistant layer, called lanolin, in addition to shrinking in water, washing is not recommended.

Down & Synthetic Duvets Should Be Washed

A down and synthetic comforter can be machine washed.  However, stuffing your comforter in a small/normal machine will not thoroughly clean your comforter. You will also need a large dryer.

For this reason, we recommend washing your down and synthetic duvet either at a laundromat or sending it to a professional cleaners.
